Functional Skills English specifications enable the learner to develop confidence and fluency in, and a positive attitude towards, English. Learners should be able to demonstrate their competence in English by using it in real-world situations as well as
demonstrating a sound grasp of basic English knowledge and skills.

Structure
The purpose of the Functional Skills English Level 1 qualification is to prepare the learner for work, study and life. Learners who achieve this qualification will demonstrate the ability to read, write, speak, listen and communicate in English. Learners will be able to apply these skills effectively to a range of purposes in the workplace and in real life situations.
Course Duration
Learners can achieve this qualification in 8-12 weeks.

Entry Requirements
This qualification is suitable for learners aged pre-16 and above, although it is recommended that learners should be aged at least 14.
Delivery & Content
This qualification consists of 3 mandatory components:
Component 1 - Speaking, Listening and Communication
Component 2 - Reading
Component 3 - Writing
For a learner to achieve the qualification and be awarded their certificate, they must obtain a Pass grade in the assessment for each component.
Assessment
This qualification is assessed via 2 external assessments and one controlled assessment.
The external assessments cover the following components:
• Reading
• Writing
The controlled assessment covers the following component:
• Speaking, Listening and Communicating.
Learners can sit paper-based assessments or online asessments on-demand.
