The Functional Skills qualification in Mathematics is an ideal qualification for learners wishing to develop practical, transferable skills in Mathematics in order to work confidently, effectively and independently in life. It is suitable for a wide range of individuals and is fundamental to the successful completion of various wider qualifications and frameworks, such as Apprenticeships.

Structure
The purpose of the Functional Skills Mathematics Level 1 qualification is to demonstrate both mathematical skills at the appropriate level and the ability to apply mathematical thinking effectively to solve problems successfully in the workplace and in other real life situations.
Course Duration
Learners can achieve this qualification in 8-12 weeks.

Entry Requirements
This qualification is suitable for learners aged pre-16 and above, although it is recommended that learners should be aged at least 14.
Delivery & Content
This qualification consists of one mandatory component:
Component 1: Mathematics
To be awarded the Functional Skills qualification in Mathematics, learners are required to meet the requirements of the skills standards by successfully achieving the mandatory external assessment. Grades are not awarded.
This qualification has one external assessment divided into 2 sections.
• Section A: The non-calculator section
• Section B: The calculator section
Assessment
This qualification is assessed via one external assessment which is task-based and invigilated. Once the completed assessments are returned to NCFE, they are marked by NCFE Examiners.
Each assessment has been designed so that the tasks are realistic and relatable to everyday context.
The Level 1 external assessment has a duration of 120 minutes.
The assessment is divided into 2 sections, non-calculator and calculator:
• Section A: The non-calculator section contains 25% of the total marks, is completed first, and has a duration of 30 minutes.
• Section B: The calculator section contains 75% of the total marks, is completed second and has a duration of 90 minutes.
The pass mark is a combination of marks from both sections.

Outcomes & Progression
Learners who achieve Level 1 Functional Skills in Mathematics could progress to:
• NCFE Level 2 Functional Skills Qualification in Mathematics
• NCFE Level 2 Award in Maths
As this qualification develops transferable skills which will be useful in work and life, learners could also progress onto a variety of qualifications in Employability, Money Management, or vocational areas.
